Dear DirecTV:

You? Suck, and are thisclose to losing my business. Why am I paying for you? If I wanted to watch Wimbledon on ESPN2, I'd just switch to Dish Network or cable! Once again, I'm forced to turn to online streams to watch the matches I want to watch.

I get that you want to finish showing the US Open golf tournament. But why advertise the Wimbledon mix if you're not going to actually do it? It's called false advertising, and you bet your sorry ass I'll be emailing and calling all sorts of people to complain today.

Like it would be really hard for you to free up a few stations for Wimbledon? Pathetic.

Your service is shitty in general, and the only reason I've got it is for better coverage of the slams. If you're not even offering me that, why am I paying?

I won't be for long.

No love,
Me

Wimbledon Draw

Good morning, (imaginary) lovelies. Long time, no post. I've been recovering from the emotionally draining French Open... okay, I've really been swamped beneath an avalanche of freelance projects that needed my attention. Because I like to do things like eat and, you know, pay my rent.

In any case, this morning--right now, in fact--Wimbledon's draw is happening. I'm eager to see this year's lineup.

And according to Wimbledon's twitter updates, Murray has landed on Nadal's half of the draw. That is assuming that Rafa doesn't pull out of the tournament before Monday.

Nadal: Might Not Play Wimbledon

Wow. Just saw that Uncle Toni is not optimistic about Rafa defending his Wimbledon title this year.

How huge is THAT? Who thinks Roger will be back to number one by year's end?

I sincerely hope Rafa figures out what's wrong with his knee(s) and takes whatever steps necessary to recover. Missing Wimbledon now is nothing if it will keep him on the court in the long run.

I do question why Toni chose to divulge this info today, though. Why air this out the night before the French Open Final? To imply that Rafa would be there if not for the knee? To rattle Roger's or Soderling's--take your pick which one--confidence?

I'm a sneaky, suspicious bitch, so I'm sure it's nothing so sinister. The timing just seems odd.

Federer's in the Finals!

What a match. Federer sails past Juan Martin Del Potro to the finals at Roland Garros in a five-set, roller coaster ride of a match.

My emotions were up and down and all over the map during that match. But Roger did it in the end, and I can't wait until Sunday.

Dear Juan Martin Del Potro:

You played your hardest--and you played some amazing tennis. It was almost hard to see you lose at the end, even though I was rooting for Roger. You're one of my favorite players, and I'm going to make a prediction right now:

In two or three years, you're going to be the number one player in the world. That's a huge prediction, I know, but I said the same thing about Nadal in 95 when he won the French Open. Sometimes you can just see it in a person's game.

Can't wait to see what you do at Wimbledon,
C

Dear Roger, part two:

I knew you could do it. What an amazing, hard-fought match.

Now you'd better beat Soderling in the final or I'm going to disown you. Do it for your fans. Do it for Rafa, and all of his disgruntled fans. Do it for Mirka and Fed Jr. Just DO IT!

Love and bonne chance!
C

Dear Roger:

You may be down two sets to one, but I still believe.

Lots of love,
C

Dear NBC:

*Primal scream of rage*

You imbeciles. You freaking moronic crap-sucking bastards. First you played Meet the Press instead of the the momentous Nadal upset. Now you're playing the TAPED Soderling vs. Gonzalez match instead of the LIVE FREAKING OCCURRING NOW AS I TYPE FEDERER vs DEL POTRO SEMI.

What the frak is wrong with you? NBC, you have the worst tennis coverage in the history of bad coverage. No wonder you're the last-ranked network. No wonder Telemundo has bested you for ratings a couple times this season.

You're idiots. I've never seen such horrible handling of a major sporting event. Would you DARE have this kind of coverage of an NBA playoff game? Of an NFL game?

Do you THINK we want to watch taped matches that--heads up here, fools--we already know the results for? Let me clue you in: this is 2009. There's a little thing called the internet now. The fans already know what happened in this match--why should they bother to watch it?

And if you can't give your customers what they want? We'll go to the internet to get it. I would love to support legitimate coverage of my favorite sport. But if you fuck things up this badly? I'm going to watch a stream of the CURRENT LIVE MATCH THAT YOU'RE NOT AIRING. The match that features ROGER FEDERER, arguably the most POPULAR TENNIS PLAYER IN THE WORLD.

Let's think about this for a second. Don't you think you might get better ratings if you give the people what they want? If you show the SEMI FINAL matches live? The matches with the most popular players live?

Forget you. I've got a high-def stream on the internet to get back to.

Also? You suck. I hope your entire network keeps going the way it's going--down the tubes.

No love,
C

Soderling...defeats Gonzalez

...Oy.

What happened, Gonzo? You had him down 4-1 in the fifth set. All you had to do was hold serve two freaking times, and you would have won. That's it. Instead, you got sloppy and let him dominate you.

What an ugly match. What a crappy French Open this has turned out to be.

Why yes, I'm bitter.

And now Federer HAS to beat Del Potro. The way Soderling is playing, I don't see Del Potro taking him. And if Soderling wins the freaking French Open, I'm going to swear off tennis. Right after puking.

What the frak, man. What the frak.

Soderling vs. Gonzalez

Well, the first set is gone and Soderling took it 6-3. Even I have to admit the man is playing some impeccable tennis. He's putting the ball where he wants it, hitting it cleanly, and keeping his opponent on the run.

I'm still not willing to give up on Gonzo, though. Once he shakes off those nerves and figures out Soderling's game, he can take him. It's just one set... Right?...

Right?

Safina through to the French Open Finals!

Safina slides past Cibulkova to reach the finals at Roland Garros, 6-3,6-3. She looked a little sloppy at times, but there's no denying her game. Go, Dina, go!

Safina v Cibulkova, 1st Women's Semifinal

Oops. Overslept this morning. Had just enough time to flip on my TV and see Cibulkova breaks Safina's serve to open the match. No problem, though; we all know one lost serve means nothing when it comes to someone as tenacious as Dinara. Sure enough, she soon breaks back and races to a 5-2 lead. Unless Cibulkova steps it up a notch, Safina's going to slam through her as easily as she did her first few opponents.

So...for the final, it looks (to me) like we're looking at another Kuznetsova v. Safina blockbuster. Kuznetsova is playing some amazing tennis; Safina beat her the last time they played, but can she do it again?

I think so. I may be blinded by my Safina fangirlness, but it looks to me like she's going to get her first slam here, and shut all of her critics (*coughSerenacough*) up.

Roger is THROUGH!

Roger over Monfils in three--7-6, 6-2, 6-4. Awesome. That makes a record 20 semifinals!

Sveta through to the semis; Federer kicking butt

Am I right or am I right? Kuznetsova is through to the semis, where she'll play Sam Stosur.

Did I say four sets for Fed to win? Forget that--the Swiss Maestro is going through in three. *Crosses fingers*

Stosur: First Woman through to the Semis in the Bottom Half

Stosur spanks Cirstea, 6-1, 6-3, and will play the winner of the Serena/Sveta match--and it's looking pretty likely that the winner will be Sveta.

Roland Garros: Quarterfinals, Day 2

Too early. I'm not a person made for 8 AM. It's better than 5AM, I suppose. Oh, the things I do for tennis.

On to today's matchups. It's a blockbuster day. First up is Serena vs. Kuznetsova on Court Suzanne Lenglen?? While Stosur and Cirstea are on Philippe Chatrier? The French really do hate Serena, don't they? I like Serena and Svetlana, and this should be an interesting match. I'm not sure who will win. Ordinarily, I'd say Serena, but I've got one of those funny feelings that Svetlana is going to pull through. Still, it's hard to count a Williams sister out in this stage of a slam.

Then comes the match of the tournament: Federer vs. Monfils. Monfils impressed the hell out of me with his play in that match against Roddick, and completely turned me off of him as a player with his antics and attitude. Usually I find him amusing, but the rolling his eyes, and pumping up an already super pumped up crowd was just poor sportsmanship. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when Andy Roddick is more of a gentleman in a match than his opponent.

Plus, I remember a few years back when Monfils was playing juniors, and how much all the other players hated him.

I fear for Roger, but I refuse to believe he'll lose. I'm going to have faith and say--Roger will take it in 4. He'll lose the first set, then win the next three.

For the other matches, I'm picking Del Potro over Robredo--the Argentine has just looked too good out there. On the other hand, I haven't watched Robredo play a single match here in Paris, and he's obviously upped his game. Plus, it would be nice to see him get some respect for a change--and I think Federer (who is going to BEAT MONFILS) will have an easier time picking off Robredo than Del Potro. Yes, Roger has rolled past Del Potro the last few times they've played, but Del Potro keeps getting better and better, so...

For Stosur vs. Cirstea...no idea. Cirstea played some amazing tennis against Jankovic, but the nerves-factor of being in her first quarterfinals at a grand slam might affect her. Of course, it might equally affect Stosur. Who knows.

Au Revoir, Davydenko

And sorry you had such a sucky birthday. :(

Soderling in the semis? Excuse me while I go puke somewhere.

Meanwhile, Safina is up 4-2 in the third and final set. If she can just hang in there, she'll have it. Vika is playing good, but Safina has held steady. At least one person I like has won so far today....

No Bagels For Davydenko! Yet...

Phew! Davydenko finally held serve. Now he and Safina are BOTH down 1-5. Ugh. Come on, guys. Shake off those nerves!

Roland Garros: The Quarter Finals Edition

Still kind of reeling from the Nadal defeat over here, I have to admit. At least Fed pulled it out, like I thought he would. After watching Monfils cream Roddick yesterday, though, I fear Federer's ability to beat the Frenchman. If Monfils plays the way he did against Roddick, and Roger keeps playing the way HE has been...well, I'm thinking that the Fed Express will come to a halt.

The Safina/Azarenka match has just started...and Safina's already down 0-2. Vika isn't the type of player to lay down and roll over, so I look for this to turn into a battle royale on Philippe Chatrier.

Also happening right now--the Davydenko/Soderling match. C'mon Davydenko! Sod off, Soderling! Okay, I've calmed down a bit (ha, right). Is there any question who I'm rooting for here?

YES! Safina just held serve, making it 1-2.

I don't really care who comes through Sharapova's match--though I expect Maria will. Not a fan of hers, but man, what a champion! There's no denying her fight out there. I've expected her to lose every match until now; of course, that means that now that I believe she'll win, she'll lose. :)

For Gonzalez vs. Murray. Oy. Since the whole cheating-Blake-at-the-Olympics think from Gonzo, I've been pretty much against him. But my cold, hard little hard shrivels even more at the thought of Murray getting anywhere near the final. So...go Gonzo!

Tennis Channel just switched from Safina's match to Davydenko's. He's letting Soderling manhandle him, 0-3. NOOOO, you're better than this, Nikolay. If the semi-final turns out to be Murray/Soderling, screw that. I doubt I'll even watch the men's final. It's the year of the dickhead, apparently.

Once again: OY!

Roland Garros: The Bizarro World version

First Nole, then Rafa. Now Federer is struggling against Tommy Haas. What's going on here? Swine flu? Bad food? Something is up.

Personally, I think Murray's mom has a collection of voodoo dolls, and she's somewhere in Paris sticking pins in players to better her son's chances.

I have full confidence that Roger will pull the victory from somewhere. But can he play like this and beat Roddick or Monfils?

Nadal...OUT!

Unbelievable. Seriously...I have no words. And I had no idea how completely invested I was in Nadal at least making the finals here until that last point. I actually feel like crying, something I've never done over a tennis match.

Rafa out so soon...and to Soderling of all people. If it had been Verdasco or someone like that, the loss wouldn't sting quite so much. But to go so soon and to such a jerk... :(

Somewhere in Paris, Andy Murray and Roger Federer are celebrating.

Upset weekend indeed. Both of the defending champions out in one day.

Oi! Upset Weekend at Roland Garros

Yesterday it was Novack Djokovic who got ousted by Kohlschreiber. Ana Ivonovic just felt to Azarenka.

And right now on Court Philippe Chatrier? Rafael Nadal is losing to Robin freaking Soderling. Vamos, Rafa! C'mon! After that debacle a couple years ago at Wimbeldon, when Soderling spent his time making fun of Rafa's wedgie-picking habit and messing with his water bottles, Nadal losing to Soderling would make me want to shoot myself.

Friday, May 29, 2009

Oh, Janko--you're breaking my heart

Seriously, how many set points did Janko Tipsarevic have before giving the damn thing to Murray in the tiebreak? So frustrating. He HAD him. :(

Over on Philippe Chatrier, Shriekapova Sharapova is struggling against Shvedova.

In other heartbreaking news, my favorite Frenchman, Gilles Simon, lost to Hanescu. Too bad.

Szavay Stunner! Szavay Upsets Venus Williams

In the biggest upset at Roland Garros yet, Agnes Szavay ousted Venus Williams 6-0, 6-4. Somewhere, Maria Sharapova is is thanking the tennis gods that her half of the draw just got a lot easier.

Venus Williams...Bageled?

Szavay shocker on Suzanne Lenglen court! Amazingly, Szavay just took the first set from Venus Williams 6-0! When was the last time THAT happened? Like...never? Amazing.

Meanwhile on court 7, Davydenko won the first set but is struggling a bit in the second, with Wawrinka up 3-2 and serving. Gonzalez is serving for the first set against the plucky Ouanna, and Almagro and Verdasco are headed for a third set tiebreak. Fun stuff!

Roland Garros, Day 6

Huge matches today at the French Open! Some highlights:

Gonzalez vs. Ouanna (since Ouanna ousted by beloved Safin, I'll let you guess who I'm rooting for)

Nadal vs. Hewitt

Sharapova vs. Shvedova

Djokovic vs. Stakhovsky

Venus Williams vs. Szavay

Hanescu vs. Simon

Murray vs. Tipsarevic (go Janko!)

Almagro vs. Verdasco

Safina vs. Pavlyuchenkova

Soderling vs. Ferrer

Davydenko vs. Wawrinka

Basically, every match-up today is amazing. Hope all of you have DirecTV! :)

Federer Hangs In, Beats Acasuso 7-6(8), 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-2

It was a tough battle, but Roger Federer came out on top. Go Fed!

Live-Blogging Federer vs. Acasuso

What a match (so far). Fed just took the first set 7-6, after eeking by Acasuso in a tight tiebreak.

Meanwhile, Venus and Safarova are battling it out point for point--it's currently 5-5 in the third and final set--and Del Potro is cruising past Troicki 5-3.

ETA: Venus wins, and Federer v Acasuso heads toward another tie break. Possibly. It's 6-5 with Acasuso serving for the set, but Roger isn't going own easy--they're at deuce. Nope, scratch that. Federer's got the advantage. I'm betting on a tiebreak.

Scratch that. Acasuso holds serve and takes the second set 7-5.

Meanwhile over on court 7, Del Potro is serving for the second set.

Del Potro wins the second 7-5 and Acasuso breaks Federer's serve to begin their third set. :(

*Wails, moans, gnashes teeth* No, Fed, no--Acasuso's up 2-0 and on the verge of breaking Federer's serve. And, he does it, making the score 3-0. :(

With that, I'm out. It's 9 AM Eastern, which means it's time for me to get to work. I may be a freelancer and in charge of my own hours, but I like to keep to a schedule.

I'll sign off with:

C'mon, Fed! You can't go down now--you can do it!

Another morning at the French Open

*Yawn* Good morning, everyone. It's another bright, shiny morning at Roland Garros and there are some interesting matches up today.

My personal interests:

Federer vs Acasuso
Pascual vs Serena
Crivoi vs Monfils
Safarova vs Venus
Monaco vs. Tsonga
Roddick vs Minar
Del Potro vs Troicki

For me, Monaco v. Tsonga is the match of the day. Should be a good one, and I like both players.

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

And she's on a roll...

Safina beats Diatchenko 6-1, 6-1. So close to another double-bagel. While Serena, Venus, Ana and Jalena have struggled so far at Roland Garros, Safina has made a big, bold statement that she's number one for a reason.

Safina: In It to Win It

Once again, Dinara Safina is first up at the French Open; once again, she is slaughtering her opponent. After double-bageling Britain's Anne Keothavong in her first round match, she's got Diatchenko down 5-0 in the first set of her second match.

Go Safina. She's my favorite player on the WTA tour, and if I were a betting woman (which I'm not), I'd put money on her at least making it to the final, if not winning the whole tournament outright. She'll have to make it through a couple of Williams sisters to do that, but if she keeps playing the way she is now...Venus and Serena need to watch out.

Hilary Swank at the Madrid Open?

Well, that's random. Can't say I expected to see her up there.

Upset! Federer Nails Nadal in the Madrid Final, 6-4 6-4

That title sounded a little naughtier than I meant for it to. Oh well. Undoubtedly, people (or at least Nadal fans) will brush this loss off as Nadal being tired from yesterday's Djokovic slugfest or attribute it to his problematic knees. But Nadal has played sloppily all week while Federer has looked, more or less, in top form. It's a well-deserved win, and the implications for the upcoming French Open are very interesting.

Amazing Semifinal Match Between Nadal and Djokovic

Wow. Just wow. What an epic, intense match. I was going to write it up reporter-style, but I'm absolutely drained. Big round of applause for Novack Djokovic. He may have lost, but he played an amazing game. The level of shot-making was incredible. Take THAT, Andy Murray. Murray is good, but I don't think he could have gone toe-to-toe with Nadal like that (even with Nadal not at his best), or hit even half of those shots. Murray may be number three now, but if Djokovic keeps playing like that, he won't be for long.

Nadal vs. Djokovic in the Semi-Finals at Madrid

And the match is ready to start. Once again it's Rafa Nadal vs Novak Djokovic. Thankfully not in the finals this time, though. Give Fed a chance, will you Nole?

I considered live-blogging the match, but since my blog is brand new and nobody is reading it yet, what would be the point? It might entertain me, but it probably wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to someone reading it four hours from now. So I'll just post a wrap-up once the match is over. As my non-existent readership waits with baited breath.

For the first time in a long while, I'm really excited about the semis of an open. I love three of the four competitors (Nadal, Federer and Del Potro) and love to hate the fourth (Nole, obviously). So it's good times.

Rafa has the edge here, obviously, but his play has been a bit sloppy lately. He's hitting the net more than I've ever seen him and firing shots wide that he could have made in his sleep last year. Nole definitely has a chance--he's playing pretty well, but it's hard to say if it's good enough. Fed and Nadal are both a little off their games, but Djokovic hasn't really been matched up against anyone who could challenge him, not in Madrid anyway. It'll be interesting to see how he plays today.

Safina Slams Past Schnyder For a Spot in the Finals of the Madrid Open

Dinara Safina had no problem defeating Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open.

Despite some ill-timed double faults and forehand miscues, Safina’s ability to make big shots when it counted the most helped her to take the first set at 6-4.

Schnyder had a chance to break Safina’s serve early in the second, but failed to capitalize on the Russian’s unforced errors. Safina held serve and went on to break Schnyder in the next game. From there it was full steam ahead as Safina overpowered Schnyder to win the second set at 6-2.

The World No.1 one took just 75 minutes to secure her spot in tomorrow’s final against No.11 seed Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki beat Amelie Mauresmo of France in a nearly two hour match that went to a tiebreak in the first set and ended at 7-6 (1), 6-3. Mauresmo, who hit five double faults and won a dismal 39% of her first serves, had no answer for the soon-to-be 10th-ranked Danish teenager’s game. Mauresmo was up 5-3 in the first with two set points before Wozniacki broke back to level the score and then blaze through the tiebreak.

Wozniacki and Safina will meet Sunday, May 17th 2009 for the final.
